Eid-Al-Adha: Gujarat HC wants all districts to ban the slaughter of animals in public

Seizure of two public interest disputes (PIL) aimed at totally prohibiting the slaughter of goats, sheep, buffaloes and the consumption of this meat between July 31 and August 1, on the occasion of Bakri Eid, the High Court of Gujarat (HC) on Thursday ordered that a notification similar to the one already issued in the city of Ahmedabad also be issued statewide.

The Ahmedabad Police Station passed an order under Article 144 of the CrPC on July 25, prohibiting animal sacrifices in public places or animal processions in the city of Ahmedabad. Posted by Police Commissioner Ashish Bhatia, the notification prohibited not only such sacrifices in public places, but also in private places where they would be “visible to the public”, as they could “disturb community harmony”.

The division bench of Chief Justice Vikram Nath and Judge JB Pardiwala ordered that a notification to the same effect “be issued by all the police commissioners of their respective districts in the state of Gujarat”.

Yash Shah, a resident and social activist of Rajkot, and the Pranin Foundation, an animal rescue organization based in Vadodara, had filed PILs calling for the slaughter ban. Lead lawyer HM Parikh representing the applicants argued that in the “current pandemic situation” there should be an absolute ban on the slaughter of animals and the consumption of meat that has not been certified as suitable for the country. consumption by an officer competent in law.

It was also submitted that “there is palpable concern among billions of Indian citizens that if Bakri Eid is allowed to be celebrated on a regular basis then it will be an invitation for disaster to strike… and by not regulating it. Bakri Eid event, with all certainly, (Covid-19) will dramatically increase the rampant spread of the pandemic. “
